Custom sheet metal work: when the part does not have an industry yet
Most of what leaves our floor is custom in the literal sense: a part made to one customer’s drawing, in a quantity from one piece to fifty thousand. What changes between industries is the emphasis — tolerance, finish, documentation, volume — and the fastest way to a good price is to be explicit about which of those actually matter for your part.
We would rather quote a part twice than guess at the requirements. A drawing with tolerances, a finish specification and a quantity range lets us price the real job; a drawing without them forces us to price a worst case, which is always more expensive.
- What we make when it is not on a category page
- One-off machine retrofits and replacement panels
- Prototype runs ahead of a production award
- Brackets, plates and formed parts for OEM equipment
- Enclosures for electronics, instruments and lab equipment
- Assemblies with hardware, welding and finishing included
- Tell us the function, not just the geometry
- Two brackets with identical outlines can need completely different processes: one is cosmetic, one is structural; one is welded and stress-relieved, one is bolted. Knowing what the part does lets us hold the tolerances that matter and relax the ones that do not.
- Tolerances are a cost dial
- General tolerances per ISO 2768 are the default for formed parts. Tightening everything to ±0.05 mm does not make the part better — it adds operations and inspection cost. Stating critical-to-function dimensions explicitly is the cheapest design improvement available.
- Volume changes the process, and the process changes the design
- A laser-cut and bent part at fifty pieces becomes a punched or progressive-die part at fifty thousand, and the design should be reviewed for that change: hole forms, bend reliefs, burr direction and grain direction all matter differently once a die is involved.
- Material and finish choices for custom parts
- SPCC, SGCC, 304/316 stainless, 5052 and 6061 aluminium, copper and brass cover almost everything we are asked for. Finishing runs from powder coat and anodising to plating, brushing, sandblasting and silk printing. If the material or finish is unusual, send the requirement early — sourcing a non-standard coil or a special finish can change the lead time more than the fabrication itself.
- Quality records for custom programmes
- Every order ships with inspection against the drawing; first-article inspection reports, dimensional reports, material certificates and coating records are available where the programme needs them. We keep the drawing revision and the inspection records linked, so a repeat order years later is made to the same standard as the first.
What we make, not just who for
Enclosures, cabinets, chassis, brackets, panels and frames — with the design constraints each one comes with.
